The Colony (Fire Ant, Silver Ant, & Worker Ant) & The Batiri (Kodama & Obariyon) vs. The Flood (Ares, Oleg the Usurper, Jimmy Jacobs, deviANT, & Volgar)
Story of the Match: I think it is worth mentioning that The Batiri have been in two straight main events. So, read into that what you will. Volgar is one of Jimmy Jacobs’ masked goons. The match was structured as a brawl all over the building. Wrestlers would sporadically end up in the ring. There was one moment where both teams squared off in full, and the fans got really excited for it. Eventually, deviANT was defeating after eating the Batiri finisher and then tapping to the Chikara Special.
After the match, Deucalion came out. Jacobs blamed the loss on deviANT. Deucalion seems less round than when I first saw him, which I guess rules out Hero . Deucalion gave deviANT the chokeslam backbreaker that killed Kobald. I still like the idea of Deucalion and think it’s the lone intriguing element of The Flood.
Analysis: Remember in 2012 when people were complaining about the repetitiveness of the Gekido brawls? Ok, that’s what is going on with most Flood matches only they’re seemingly happening multiple times per show. It’s nearly impossible to care because the motivations for the characters are so flimsy and the premise makes so little sense. Why is Mike Quackenbush, the Director of Fun, continuing to book these invaders whose stated purpose is to destroy Chikara? Why do any of these people want to destroy Chikara? Sure, they all have a “grudge” against Chikara, but without understanding any of these characters as individuals, it’s impossible to care about their actions as a group. On top of that, the tecnicos’ motivations and actions are all getting lumped together which is removing a ton of subtly from their characters. If all the characters on each side want the same thing and are going about accomplishing it in the same way, it has little to no meaning.
