This was the 2011 Royal Rumble match.

This Rumble had a few notable things about it. The most obvious one was that it had forty people in it instead of the usual thirty.

A higher number should encourage the company to do lots of surprises and fun entries. We instead only got Kevin Nash and Booker T. Granted, those were genuine surprises at the time and fun middle fingers at TNA and their Main Event Mafia return angle.

Another big component of the match was the bizarre feud between The NEW NEXUS led by CM Punk and The Corre led by Wade Barrett. Who could have possibly given a single fuck about that feud? Anyway, the feud was not blown off here, and The New Nexus was easily defeated by John Cena and Hornswoggle before Wade even made it into the match.

The winner ended up being Alberto del Rio. ADR was somewhat of a shocking choice at the time, because he was still pretty new to the company, and it’s a company not known for pushing new people.

There was a moment at the end with Santino recovering on the floor at the last second to tease a shocking underdog win. ADR managed to dispatch him though.

This Rumble was very watchable, but it would be a hard to point some objectively good things about it beyond the Santino tease at the end. That’s the magic of the Rumble I suppose though. (***)
