If Samoa Joe won, he retained the ROH World Championship. If Joe was pinned, that person was the new ROH World Champion. If someone else was pinned, the pinner became the number one contender.
This match featured one awesome 30-second sequence between Joe and Ki and then not a whole lot else that was worth writing home about. It was also overlong which is quickly becoming an issue with Joe’s 2004 when it was not at all a case with Joe’s 2003. Also, ROH’s inability to ever do the Joe/Ki rematch properly will always be one of its greatest failings as a company. Joe submitted Whitmer to win. (**1/4)
