This was the 2002 Royal Rumble match.

This Rumble was kind of sad and pathetic to be honest. It was still watchable, because it’s a Rumble. There was not much for this one to hang its head on though.

It featured a lot of returning midcard gimmicks like Godfather, Val Venis, and Goldust. All of those gimmicks were embarrassing enough during the original runs. The idea of bringing them back to setup potential full-time returns was just embarrassing.

The highlights of the match were probably Taker vs. The Hardys and then Taker vs. Maven. Both of those things involved Taker mauling the younger/over talents to the point where they looked like jobbers (if the follow-ups were better, you could maybe justify them).

It came down to HHH, Angle, and Mr. Perfect (Austin got taken out right before to make sure no one was more popular than HHH). HHH’s comeback story was not a bad idea, and it was over here. It’s hard thing to look back on though with any fondness. Skip this Rumble. (**)
