Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Mankind from WWF 1997

July 6, 1997
Calgary, Alberta

They started to brawl as soon as Mankind got to the ring. Hunter tried to run away, but Mankind caught up to him. Chyna interfered as soon as Mankind applied the Mandible Claw. Chyna ended up giving Mankind a snap powerslam into the steps to get HHH the advantage. Mankind injured his left leg on that, and Hunter targeted the injury as he worked Mankind over. As Mankind started to fight back, he inadvertently gave Hunter a low blow. He then came back. Chyna was forced to interfere again as a result. They started brawling on the floor and into the crowd. The referee ended up counting both men out.

They continued to brawl after the match.

While I think openers should generally have a clean finish, I wasn’t at all annoyed about it here. This was the type of indecisive finish that makes you interested in seeing the next match in the feud. That is an aspect of wrestling booking that the company has struggled with for years. It’s weird to be reminded of a time when they did it well.

This was a strong brawl that managed to make me care about a feud that I did not get to see at the time. GOOD stuff.

Match Rating: ***1/4
