Rocky Maivia vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley from WWF 1997

February 16, 1997
Chattanooga, Tennessee

Originally reviewed here.

This was for Rocky’s Intercontinental Championship.

After a few minutes of back and forth action, HHH got control. This has all been quite fun. Neither man is anywhere close to where they would be as performers a few years from this point though. HHH worked him over for a while. Rock made a comeback after hitting a leaping crossbody. Rock hit the diving crossbody, but HHH kicked out. HHH came back with a Snake Eyes for a nearfall. Rock hit a sloppy DDT. HHH came back, but Goldust showed up to distract him. That allowed Rock to hit a bridging back suplex: 1…2…3

After the match, Chyna choked Marlena from the crowd.

That was *terrible* way for Rocky Maivia to retain the title. That match itself was fine, but it was such a far cry from what they would do together years from now. The mechanics were mostly fine; they just could not generate much emotion.

Match Rating: **1/2
